Game of Thrones is a gripping drama set in the backdrop of Westeros, a desolate and independent continent that’s a world apart from life, as we know it. The show is based on a best selling novel series, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, by George R.R. Martin and throws light on the violence and rage that prevailed over this secluded kingdom, as noble families raged war against each other for possession of the coveted Iron Throne. The TV series is created by David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and premiered on April 17, 2011, on HBO.
The land of Westeros is in itself, astounding enough to lure one to watch the series. The series is known for presentation of eccentricities such as summers that last for an entire decade, which are followed by winters for an indefinite period. Unpredictability, both in terms of human behavior and nature’s whims, in this land, is what makes it every bit fascinating.
The premiere episode, entitled ‘Winter is Coming’, sets off with an invitation being extended to the Starks of Winterfell by the royal family. This is followed by King Robert making a rather unexpected request to Eddard Stark, which turns out to be nearly impossible to refuse. Soon after, the focus shifts to the Targaryen prince, who is in exile across the sea. The prince devises a clever plan to procure the Iron Throne, which is by getting his sister married to the warlord, Drogo. In return, he demands the army of Drogo.
Meanwhile, an air of dread looms over Winterfell, as the possibility of the royal family being involved in a murder surfaces, with Catelyn Stark procuring a clue hinting towards the crime. The suspense reaches a crescendo with young Bran Stark discovering a secret that could throw his entire life into peril.
