
Aired on Channel 4, Grand Designs is one of a kind, which has the unique concept of ‘property’as its format. The show throws light on those few architectural ventures, which involve construction of houses, on the part of the show’s presenter, after he negotiates with the clients.
Talkback Thames serves as the executive producer of the series and, Kevin McCloud initiates each episode by taking a specific project in his hand. The day which starts with client interaction, ends with an automated computer visualization of the masterpiece in making. As work reaches to its next stage, Kevin takes care of all the unavoidable delays and any sort of modifications, which may be required time to time.
Frequent overflowing of budget and Kevin’s close look at designing special features of house is what, that adds an extra charm to the show. When the building reaches a completion state and the owners move in, Kevin tours the house while highlighting each of its segments. He gives his valuable feedback on various areas of the house that gets constructed under his guidance.
In the later seasons of the show, you can see one interesting addition. Once the furnishing of an old house is finished, Kevin stays for one night with its occupants. Be it converted water towers or underground luxurious houses, you can see them all on the show. Their designs may vary, but style and extravagance remains the one common factor in all of them.
The series premiered with a lavish home, being built on a clifftop in Newhaven and we got to revel in a huge Georgian-style house in season 2. The merger of traditional English building techniques with 21st century’s high-tech designs grabbed the attention of all in season 3.
Season 4 stole the attention, as in the picturesque locales of Buckinghamshire, a usual mansion was built, which had the symphony of dramatic roofs and angels. Season 5 became all the more exciting as a couple decided to build a house on their own, which could be the house of their dreams. A couple, Theo and Elaine got to stumble upon magnificent Campsie Fells. They settled down on the place to create on it, a strikingly beautiful mansion, with an exterior design that spoke for itself.
In the tenth season of the series, Kevin returned to see how some old building had shaped up over the course of time. He met O'Hare's and witnessed, that they were leading a prosperous life with their grand mansion that cascaded down an enchanting hillside and, made for a magnificent thrilling view.
