Spartacus: Blood and Sand is a show based around the historical figure of Spartacus, a Thracian Gladiator who lead the major slave uprising in ancient Rome. The show is replete with graphically enhanced gore and is a must watch for those like adrenalin- pumping thrill.
Though the show is in English, it tries to stick closer to the Latin rules of sentence structure, in order to impart a more authentic feel. Another notable thing is that the creators of the show arranged the sequences in such a way that Spartacus’ remotely known early life is brought into focus. It portrays the more popular historical facts of his life with brilliant precision.
Season 1 of the show featured Andy Whitefield in the lead role, though he couldn’t continue with this role because of cancer affliction. Liam McIntyre took up his role from the second season. Season 1 of Spartacus Blood and Sand, was followed by a six episode prequel to season 2.
The main cast of the show includes Andy Whitfield as Spartacus (Season 1), Liam McIntyre as Spartacus (Season 2), Erin Cummings playing Sura (Spartacus’ wife), John Hannah playing Quintus Lentulus Batiatus. It also features Lucy Lawless as Lucretia (Batiatus' wife), Peter Mensah donning the role of Doctore Oenomaus and Manu Bennett as Crixus. He, too, enacts an important role as Batiatus' top gladiator.
Season 1 of the show had some engrossing episodes like Party Favors, in which Spartacus has to kill Varro against his will. It ended in disturbing him deeply. He remains troubled until Mira comes to Comfort him. It brought out the psychological paradigm that goes behind what may seem to be incessant killing.
Such other incidents give a different edge to the show as the story gradually moves to some of the most notable historic happenings, revolving around Spartacus.
