A spin-off of the highly successful sitcom, Girlfriends, The Game is a comedy drama that focuses on the trials and tribulations of a young woman who gives up her promising career in order to be with her boyfriend. Produced by Dan Dugan and created by Mara Brock Akil, the series takes a peek into the highly competitive world of professional football from a woman’s point of view.
The Game is set in the world of a fictitious football team, the San Diego Sabers, and focuses on the lives of the women who are, in one way or another, connected to the players on the rolls of the team. At the center of attention is the medical student Melanie Barnett (Tia Mowry), who gives up an offer to join the highly prestigious Johns Hopkins University so that she can be by the side of her footballer boyfriend, Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall).
The series focuses on Melanie’s struggle as she tries to cope up with the demands of the highly materialistic world of professional football, even as she attempts to give her best at studies. However, Melanie isn’t the only woman juggling with her life and football in the sitcom; there are several others, each of which with her own prerogatives and desires.
One such woman is Tasha Mack (Wendy Robinson), a highly ambitious mother cum manager of quarter back Malik Wright (Hosea Chanchez). There is also the perpetually disgruntled Kelly Pitts (Brittany Daniel), who is the wife of Jason Pitts (Coby Bell).
The women in the series are no cardboard character, all displaying strength that exceeds the gusto of their male counterparts. All of them devote their energies so that the men in their lives stay focused on the game. Weaving a web of comic drama around these central characters, the series is perhaps a great reminder of the fact that behind every successful man, there is a woman. Thereby vindicating the title, that the greater game is not played on the field, but off it!
