Created by Richard Hatem and Grant Scharbo, The Gates is a supernatural thriller that delves into the sinister aspects of a seemingly normal suburban community. The upscale community and its residents have many secrets that lurk underneath the surface and go unnoticed in a cursory glance.
The series follows police Chief Nick Monohan (Frank Grillo), who moves from Chicago to a new area called, The Gates, and encounters one astonishing thing after another. They get the shock of their lives when they get to know that the residents are not normal human beings, but supernatural entities like werewolves, vampires, witches!
The show saw the police chief get a call to investigate a case involving a missing person. He embarks on a journey that pulls him deep into the sub-terrain of secrets, beneath the immaculately manicured lawns and white picket fences. Soon begins Nick’s encounters with the residents of The Gates: Claire Radcliffe (Rhona Mitra), a bored housewife with a penchant to make a meal out of her unfortunate human victims, Dylan Radcliffe (Luke Mably), husband of Claire and a vampire, sharing his wife’s culinary tastes.
But, this not all! There is a werewolf in the form of Brett Crezski (Colton Haynes), a witch in the form of Devon (Chandra West), an enchantress by the name of Andie Bates (Skyler Samuels), and Leigh Turner (Janina Gavankar), a female officer, who keeps her heart in a glass case.
Basing the series on the premise of a stranger in a strange land, the series is a Lynchian take on the eccentricities of suburban life. It is a fun and entertaining ride and can be seen as a lighthearted attempt to jump on the bandwagon of the popularity of supernatural tales, featuring similar kinds of entities.
While teenagers form the focus for a major part of the series, it’s the adult characters that are the crux of this superbly entertaining show. It is an intriguing addition to the list of shows that contemplate the paranormal, and Nick comes out as a shady protagonist.
