This show analyses the future of the family, as it can be gauged from the present scenario in America and other Western countries? With one out of every two marriages ending up in divorce, is the future of family in some kind of trouble? It explores if the present culture has been able to accurately portray the changing dynamics of the modern family?
Created by Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, The Middle is a brilliant new comedy that attempts to present the trials and tribulations of an average American family in a lighthearted manner. Set in the city of Orson, Indiana, the series presents the struggles that a harried house maker Frances Heck (played superbly by Patricia Heaton), has to undergo on a daily basis. Completing the slightly dysfunctional family is a devoted husband in the form of Mike Heck (Neil Flynn), and three children, Axl, Sue, and Brick, each with their own eccentricity.
It may be considered as a typical middle class American family, bonding together. The Middle employs subtle humor to portray the eccentricities and serendipities that make a normal day of life such an engrossing affair, to outside observers. The hilarious sequence of events is narrated by the mother, who also works in a car dealership. The father works in a quarry, and has a considerably more laid back approach to life.
The oldest child is a boy, Axl, who owes his name and existence to the Guns n Roses band. A star athlete at school, Axl’s default expression is that of grouchiness. He is a school going boy who prefers taking naps than helping with house chores. The second child is a studious Sue, someone whose constant attempts to belong to the ‘cool’ crown end up in failure. The last child is a highly intelligent and academically proficient Brick, whose brilliance is often overshadowed by his difficulty at social interactions.
The Middle is a hilarious and heart-warming series that shows that all is not over for the modern family, yet. That love, affection and laughs, that comes with family interactions is irreplaceable.
