Based on a Television series of the same name in the 1960s, The Prisoner is a joint production of the American cable network AMC and the English channel ITV.
Written by Bill Gallagher, the miniseries made its debut on 15th November 2009. The show is directed by Nick Hurran and stars James Caviezel as Michael. The show is centered on a village in the desert, which is simply called ‘The Village’. The residents have no knowledge of the outside world and an even more peculiar thing about this place is that every resident is identified by a number.
Michael, who is assigned the number 6, learns that he does not remember much about his life prior to the village and hence, starts developing interactions with the ‘dreamers’ who have been having memory flashes about their previous lives. In doing so, he develops close friendships with 147, a taxi driver, played by Lennie James.
Michael also develops romantic relations with Sarah (Ruth Wilson) or 313, a doctor. Another important character of the show is Curtis (2), played by Ian McKellen; who plays the leader of the village and has troubles in making Michael comfortable and at ease with his life at The Village.
The show had episodes like Arrival, which portrayed Michael’s entry in The Village. It begins with him waking up in the middle of a desert, where he sees an old man being chased and killed. He tries to save the old man by dragging him into a cave, failing in his attempt. The dying man asks him to go and meet 554 in the Village and leaves him with a message “tell them I got out”.
With this unusual turn of events, the show takes on the mysterious happenings in the Village and the attempts of Michael/6 to understand secrets that begin to unfold.
