Produced by Ashton Kutcher and Tyra Banks, True Beauty is a reality show with a difference that attempts to go beyond the skin deep definition of beauty. It aims to arrive at an understanding as to what’s the true nature of it. The show drives home a point that while the looks are important, they are not the deciding criteria for judging the true beauty of an individual. The actions, profound and trivial, speak the loudest, and they are used as measuring rod for the purpose of judgment.
This competitive reality show pits brings together ten beautiful and confident men and women so that they can demonstrate that not only are they pretty outside, but also beautiful inside. Every week, the participants are given a series of challenges that allow them to show off their physical beauty. But, it’s during the course of these challenges that the participants get opportunities to behave in a manner that the society considers as ethical or appropriate.
The judges during the first season were supermodel Cheryl Tiegs, former Miss Teen USA Vanessa Minnillo, and the famous stylist Nole Marin; who secretly observed and judged the actions of the contestants. Julia Anderson was the winner of the first season as she displayed immense amount of grace and humility. She took home a staggering amount of $ 100,000, and a chance to feature on the Most Beautiful People issue of the People magazine
Riding on the wave of huge success in the first season, the second season brought in a few minor changes. The judges were Carson Kressley, fashion consultant, and the actress, Beth Ostrosky. Vanessa Minnillo continued as the host of the show. After a series of challenges, such as Grace Under Fire, Bride In Trouble, Stop Smoking and several other hidden camera challenges, the winner of the season turned out to be Taylor, who was followed by Erika and Craig.
The show is a welcome addition to the list of reality shows that manages to differentiate itself in its quest to find the essence of true beauty
